THE BLEPHAROPLASTY INTERVENTION IN ALBANIA

The term blepharoplasty refers to surgery intended to correct excess skin and / or adipose tissue in the eyelid region.

It is an intervention indicated in cases of cutaneous and subcutaneous excess of the eyelid. It can be higher, lower or complete. During the surgery, the orbital edge treatment can be added for aesthetic purposes. The main purpose of this surgery is the correction of eyelid blemishes which are mainly characterized by:

  • Excess and ptosis (fall) of skin
  • Protrusion of the fat located in the retropalpebral chambers

These two aspects can occur singly or concurrently, only in the upper eyelids, only in the lower eyelids or in both. The most frequently encountered defect in the upper eyelids is excess skin which, when lowering, can descend to partially cover the eye opening, reducing the field of vision. Often this defect is accompanied by the protrusion of the retro-eyelid fat.

Blepharoplasty can therefore be called superior if it is performed in the upper eyelids, inferior if performed in the lower ones and superior-inferior if performed in both. These defects give the eyes a “tired” look and make the individual appear older. In many cases the bags of the lower eyelids do not recur, but with the passage of time the skin becomes looser, more redundant and a further reduction of the skin may be required in a time ranging between 5-10 years later.

Blepharoplasty, usually performed under local anesthesia, may sometimes require sedation or general anesthesia, with a 1-day hospitalization. The type and frequency of dressings, as well as the time of stitch removal, depend on the individual clinical case and the technique used. The outcome of the surgery is appreciable from the start, even if slightly altered by the inevitable post-operative swelling and bruising, it tends to stabilize within a few weeks. The surgery does not interfere in the slightest with visual skills.

Before the Blepharoplasty surgery

  • Inform the surgeon of any treatment with drugs (especially cortisone, contraceptive, antihypertensive, cardioactive, anticoagulant, hypoglycemic, antibiotic, tranquilizer, sleeping pill, stimulant, etc.)
  • Stop taking medicines containing acetylsalicylic acid (eg. Alka Seltzer, Ascriptin, Aspirin, Bufferin, Cemerit, Vivin C, etc.) at least one week before
  • Eliminate or reduce smoking at least one week before surgery.
  • Immediately report the onset of colds, sore throats, coughs, skin diseases
  • Carry out a thorough cleaning bath; wash the hair; remove the nail polish of the hands and feet, do not make up the face.
  • Get a pair of sunglasses, useful for masking the inevitable periocular bruising
  • Report the presence of eye diseases (eg glaucoma), in case it is necessary to have the authorization of the ophthalmologist.
  • Do not eat food after midnight, you can take clear liquids (tea, water) up to 6 hours before surgery.

 Surgical procedure

Surgical procedure

The intervention lasts about one – two hours depending on the extent of the procedure necessary to achieve the desired correction. Before the surgery, the surgeon proceeds with the execution of the preoperative drawings by defining the incision lines and the amount of skin to be removed. The design is performed so that the final scar can fall into a normal skin fold when the eye is open. In upper blepharoplasty, after the infiltration of local anesthetic with the addition of adrenaline to reduce bleeding, excess skin is excised. Subsequently, by spreading the muscle fibers of the underlying muscle, the excess fat is isolated and removed. In lower blepharoplasty, after the infiltration of anesthetic and adrenaline, the skin below the lashes is cut, the adipose lodges are reached and excess fat is removed. Minimal skin resection may be required.
