Before the intervention of Rhinoseptoplasty

Inform the surgeon of any treatment with drugs (especially cortisone, contraceptive, antihypertensive, cardioactive, anticoagulant, hypoglycemic, antibiotic, tranquilizer, sleeping pill, stimulant, etc.)
Stop taking medicines containing acetylsalicylic acid (eg. Alka Seltzer, Ascriptin, Aspirin, Bufferin, Cemerit, Vivin C, etc.) at least one week before
Eliminate smoking at least one week before surgery.
Immediately report the onset of colds, sore throats, coughs, skin diseases
Carry out a thorough cleaning bath; wash the hair; remove nail polish from fingernails and toenails, do not put on creams on the face.
Do not eat food from midnight, you can take clear liquids (tea, water) up to 6 hours before surgery.

Surgical Procedure

In most cases of septoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils without leaving marks on the outside. In particular cases (especially in reoperations) or in particularly complex deviations, it is necessary to make a small external incision in correspondence with the columella (the skin bridge that separates the nostrils). These incisions allow the surgeon access to the structures that make up the nose, cartilage and bone. In septoplasty we work on the cartilage (quadrangular lamina) and bone (vomer, ethmoid) structures. Sometimes the removal of the deviated portion is sufficient, in other cases the complete removal of the septum and its re-grafting is necessary. In some cases it is necessary to add tissues (more frequently cartilaginous grafts) to ensure the stability of the septum and to correct the possibly compromised nasal valve. The duration of the intervention varies from 1 to 2 hours; in more complex cases (reoperations or use of grafts) it can last more than two hours.

After the Rhinoseptoplasty surgery

Upon release, you need to be accompanied home by car.
Significant edema of the face, eyelids and nose will appear in the first 24 hours
Presence of bruising (blue) under the eyes or, rarely, small hemorrhages in the eyes
Since the nose is blocked there will be considerable discomfort from the constriction to breathe with the mouth
Swabs will be removed after 48-72 hours at the surgeon’s discretion
For at least 8-10 days, until the dressing is removed, reduce or eliminate smoking and do not blow your nose, applying the ointment prescribed by the surgeon several times a day.

Any sporting activities can be resumed after 2 weeks, as long as they do not expose the nose to possible trauma, even small ones.
Avoid the use of glasses with heavy frames .
For at least 1 month avoid direct exposure to the sun or intense heat (eg sauna, UVA lamp).
Avoid the possibility of trauma to the nose in the first few weeks (eg getting up at night without turning on the light, playing with large animals, picking up children, going to very crowded places, wearing tight-necked sweaters, etc.).
The final appearance of the operated nose can be obtained after 6-12 months, when the edema has been completely eliminated, a reduction in the sensitivity of the skin of the nose will gradually recover spontaneously.
