Abdominoplasty
ABDOMINOPLASTIC INTERVENTION IN ALBANIA
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to remove excess skin and adipose tissue from the lower abdomen, in order to restore the natural “tension” of the underlying muscles. This surgery is indicated to reduce a protruding abdomen with excess skin and abundant fat. Sometimes a liposuction of the hips may be associated, but this will be evaluated in advance by the surgeon. Stretch marks, if located below the navel, can be removed along with the excess skin, while those of the upper quadrants can only be improved in appearance due to skin tension. Abdominoplasty is a demanding operation and is performed in the hospital. The hospital stay generally lasts for 2 days.
The abdominoplasty operation takes about two to four hours depending on the extent of the procedure necessary to achieve the desired correction. The surgery can normally be performed under spinal-epidural anesthesia with sedoanalgesia, or under general anesthesia. Normally, the surgeon makes an incision in the lower portion of the abdomen, just above the pubis, and another around the navel to be able to disconnect it from the surrounding skin, leaving it attached to the underlying muscles. The skin is then detached from the abdominal muscles, proceeding upwards almost to the lower costal arch. The abdominal muscles are then remodeled with particular muscular plastics. The unglued skin is then pulled down and the excess amount is removed. Finally, the incisions made are sutured by repositioning the navel in its natural portion. The final scars will be placed above the pubis and around the navel (see drawings).
The mini-abdominoplasty usually lasts a little less: one up to two hours. It differs from complete abdominoplasty in that the navel is not disconnected, skin detachment is done up to mid-abdomen and the suprapubic scars are shorter.
In both cases, one or two suction drains will be placed to evacuate the blood and serum and a compression dressing will be performed. These drains are usually painlessly removed at the time of the first dressing. The surgical incisions are closed with sutures. An abundant compression dressing is finally applied; a urinary catheter can be used during surgery and will be removed at the end or the next morning.
After the Abdominoplasty surgery
Social activities and work should be reduced for about a month.
Driving can be resumed after 2 weeks; sexual activity after 3 weeks; sports activities after 4 – 6 weeks.
It is possible to perform a cleaning shower only after removing the stitches.
For at least a month, avoid direct exposure to the sun or intense heat (e.g. sauna, UVA lamps).
